Ten thousand years in your palm

When you take clay into your hands, you touch something very old. Clay is born from millennia of weathering rock — fine mineral sediment ground silky by water, wind and time. Ten thousand years ago, someone picked up the material of the first vessel in exactly the same way.

Ceramics is the one craft that has lived with us practically unchanged since the Neolithic. The wheel turns the same way, the hand raises the wall the same way, fire seals the form into stone the same way. What you experience at a workshop is, quite literally, humanity’s shared memory.

Perhaps that is why it feels so natural. We are not learning something new — we are remembering something that was always in our hands.
