Why does clay ground us?

Why does clay ground us?

There is a moment in every workshop I never tire of: someone touches wet clay for the first time, and their face relaxes without meaning to. It is no accident. The cool, living touch of clay speaks to the nervous system through the skin: you are here, you are now, you are safe.

Psychology calls this grounding: sensory experience pulling attention back into the present moment, out of racing thoughts and into the body. Pottery is exceptional at it — the hands keep working, the material keeps answering, and that dialogue leaves no room for rumination.

This is the simple insight every Clay Day is built on: you do not need to learn a relaxation technique to calm down. A handful of clay, a table and three undisturbed hours are enough.

Would you try it with your own team?
